Description
Armodafinil is a central nervous system stimulant classified as a wakefulness-promoting agent. It is the R-enantiomer of modafinil, meaning it is a purified form of the longer-acting component of modafinil. Because of this, armodafinil generally has a longer duration of action and may provide more sustained alertness throughout the day.
It is approved for treating excessive daytime sleepiness caused by:
-
Narcolepsy
-
Obstructive sleep apnea (as an adjunct to primary treatments like CPAP)
-
Shift work sleep disorder
The exact mechanism of action is not fully understood, but armodafinil is believed to increase dopamine levels in the brain by inhibiting dopamine reuptake. It may also influence other neurotransmitters involved in wakefulness, such as norepinephrine and histamine.
Common side effects include headache, nausea, dizziness, insomnia, dry mouth, and anxiety. More serious but rare side effects can include severe skin reactions or psychiatric symptoms. It has a lower abuse potential compared to traditional stimulants like amphetamines, but it is still a controlled prescription medication in many countries.
Armodafinil should only be used under medical supervision.
